Nursing staff and emotional support: the parturient's perspective

This study aims at characterizing the types of emotional care provided to the parturient by nursing staff. In orden to investigate this topic, an exploratory and descriptive qualitative research was developed. Data collection was accomplished in two steps: (1) observation of labor and childbirth; (2) semi-structured interviews after birth with 14 firtst-time mothers. The results were described through categories encompassing the interviews and the observation process, characterizing in three categories designated as: routine, care, interactive care and emotional support. The study also shows how the mothers perceive the support given by the nursing staff e how it has positively influenced labor and birth.
