Nowadays, vernacular architecture is a category of heritage recognized due to its environmental and cultural values. It is also gradually being considered a benchmark for contemporary architecture that seeks to be sustainable, since it is
an example of wise management of the territory, its resources, and of respect for local identities. Among the various existing vernacular building manifestations in Chile, the “quincha” or timber structure filled with raw earth, is a tradition that is still alive in rural communities. This building technique that is economic, easy to build and earthquake-resistant, has been used as basis for
technological innovation; an example of how tradition and innovation can be bonded to achieve sustainable architecture with local identity.
